Kathmandu
The Kot, the armoury beside Hanuman Dhoka, gave its name to the massacre of September 1846 that made Jung Bahadur master of the state. His family then rebuilt the city's skyline in stucco — Singha Durbar, finished in 1908, was said to be the largest palace in Asia.

He stood down briefly in 1856-57, when the office passed to his brother, before resuming it until his death.
