The Treaty of Sugauli below ceded territory Nepal itself had earlier taken from a different neighbor — see Nepal’s neighbors for how “Sikkim Tarai” came to be Nepali territory in the first place.
Ends the Anglo-Nepalese War and cedes roughly a third of Nepal’s territory, fixing borders close to today’s. The original physical copies are reportedly lost — not held in Nepal’s national archives — so every text in circulation, including the one linked here, is a transcription.

Nepal’s first national law code — courts, land, family and penance — and the document that ranked the entire population in a legal caste hierarchy until the 1963 code replaced it. A full scholarly English translation was published only recently, by Heidelberg University in collaboration with Nepali and German researchers; earlier English-language accounts of the code relied on summaries and excerpts.
